Standardised Matrix SMB range offers reactive market solution

Matrix SMB Brakes Due to its compact design and low backlash, the SMB range is ideally suited for automated robotics as well as machine tools, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and medical applications.

Matrix International will build on its formidable reputation for Servo Motor Brakes (SMB) at SPS this year, with the introduction of its SMB range in standardised sizes. Ideal for applications where precision braking is required, the new range is optimised to conform to popular motor sizes. This offers end users an easy and prompt route to servicing the most common SMB applications. SPS visitors will be able to view and discuss the new SMB range on stand 3-270.

A part of the Altra Industrial Motion Corporation, Matrix International is one of the most capable suppliers of bespoke SMB systems worldwide. Now this expertise has been applied to the standard SMB range, providing a prompt solution for precision braking applications. With compact design and low backlash, the SMB range is ideal for automated robotics, machine tools, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and medical applications.

SMB Robot Arm

Matrix engineers have delivered an impressive force-to-size ratio, meaning the range is easily integrated to new and existing designs.

Drawing on the power of over 35 years’ experience, Matrix has developed the SMB range specifically for swift deployment to the servo motor market – providing effective static holding capabilities for load positioning as well as consistent dynamic torque in emergency stop situations. Through magnetic flux optimisation, Matrix engineers have delivered an impressive force-to-size ratio, meaning the range is easily integrated to new and existing designs.

The SMB range also benefits from the input of another Altra brand, Svendborg Brakes. Matrix and Svendborg have collaborated to develop a new friction material specifically for the demanding and variable conditions of servo motor applications. This new material ensures that the design meets the torque, temperature and energy requirements of the SMB application. As a result, end users benefit from improved operational performance.

A dedicated in-house approach to lean manufacturing provides customers with a path to market leading performance and quality in reduced timeframes. Matrix pride themselves on the ability to manufacture and assemble all SMB components in-house, with lean principles enacted throughout the organisation to ensure a reactive response and timely delivery to customers.

SMB Motor Cutaway

The SMB range benefits from a new friction material that was developed specifically for servo motor applications.

The standardised range offers many customisable options to tailor the fitment to suit end user requirements. End users can specify flange or rear mounting configurations, allowing the brakes to be fitted in various orientations within their servo motor chassis. Hubs can be ordered separately with specified bores and fixing types to suit shaft requirements. Choice of electrical connections and lead wire length ensure the SMB range can be easily integrated into the motor control system.

Visitors to SPS will have the chance to view the SMB range on the Matrix International stand, as well as take in a 3D video animation which informs on the key facets of the range. In addition, attendees will have the chance to discuss their braking requirements with Matrix representatives on stand, benefitting from company experience in the industry since 1985.

SPS IPC Drives 2017 takes place from 28th- 30th November at Nuremberg Messe, Nuremberg, Germany. Visitors can meet Matrix International on stand 3-270.
