Altra Industrial Motion brands present cutting-edge drivetrain solutions for marine applications at SMM 2018
The Shipbuilding, Machinery & Marine Technology (SMM) trade fair is the world’s leading event for the maritime industry. The 2018 edition will take place from 4th-7th September at Hamburg Messe. At the fair, Twiflex, Wichita Clutch, Stromag and Bibby Turboflex will demonstrate how the combined power transmission expertise of Altra Industrial Motion Corporation can help the marine, offshore and shipping industries with state-of-the-art power transmission solutions.
The renowned maritime exhibition brings together shipping operators, shipbuilders and service providers from all over the world to discuss the advances in offshore technology, ship and shipyard engineering, cargo handling systems, ship fitting and maritime services.
Among the 2,000 plus exhibitors, Altra Industrial Motion, a leading global provider of electromechanical power transmission and motion control products, will present its comprehensive and extensive product offering from several of its popular marine brands.
Twiflex, leading manufacturer of high performance braking systems, will be showcasing its innovative Turning, Locking and Braking (TLB) system. Developed specifically for the marine market, TLB offers three separate functions in a single interface to provide a compact and low-cost solution for propulsion shaft maintenance. Its unique design means bi-directional continuous turning of the shaft for accurate alignment and bearing conditioning when engine power is not available. The braking function prevents shaft wind milling and a locking device provides increased safety.
Adding to Twiflex’s brake expertise will be Stromag, demonstrating its new range of high-performance modular braking systems from the HPB series. The compact, modular design makes the HPB range advantageous for use in ships and harbour cranes. In addition, all the models are flood- and seawater-proof, thanks to the elevated protection against harsh environmental conditions, e.g. corrosive saltwater. In this way, optimal service lives as well as low maintenance are ensured.
Wichita Clutch will exhibit the new sinter metallic, ‘high energy’ variant of its proven marine pneumatic clutch range. The sinter metallic friction version provides excellent wear characteristics when compared to organic friction designs and is intended to provide clutching solutions for high energy applications beyond the scope of traditional dry clutching alternatives. To compliment the sinter friction design, a pin drive arrangement replaces the conventional tooth driven connection. The resulting open ring design provides for excellent dust extraction and improved ventilation to further enhance the ‘high energy’ capabilities.
Also on the stand, Bibby Turboflex will present its range of high-performance couplings. The torsional stiffness and the lightweight of the equipment allow these solutions to support high-speed marine propulsion gas turbine engines of modern navies. The high-performance couplings can transmit torques of up to 822,000 Nm at a maximum speed of 4,200 rpm. Of particular interest to visitors will be a 1:4 scale model of the Turboflex type 6HS-39-400, a 4.5 m long product designed to transmit 36MW of power to from twin on-board gas turbines rotating at 3,300 rpm.
Specialist engineers from Altra’s family will be available on stand 404, hall B1 to discuss the individual products presented as well as how the company can provide bespoke, turnkey integrated solutions that satisfy the complex and challenging needs of the maritime industry.
