A major manufacturer of offshore oil and gas rigs needed robust disc brakes for king post cranes installed on one of its larger mobile, self-elevating (jackup) platform models. Each rig features five DC motor-driven cranes with available lifting capacities up to 68 metric tons. Each crane’s triple redundant braking system includes a disc brake and a drum brake combined with dynamic motor braking. The disc brake provides parking/holding and emergency braking functionality.

The OEM contacted Svendborg Brakes for a solution that could perform in temperatures ranging from -10°C to +50°C. Upon careful review of the application specifications, Svendborg supplied BSFH 520 spring applied, hydraulically-released caliper disc brakes for each of two hoists on each of the five cranes. The Individual mono-spring calipers provide a clamping force of 49,008 lb. (218,000 N).

With an operating range between -20 ̊C to +55 ̊C (-4 ̊F to 131 ̊F), the rugged cast iron BSFH 520 units are built to withstand challenging offshore drilling environments. The BSFH Series brakes delivered met DNV certification and featured special seals for use with fire-resistant oil.
